Cuties Controversy started as the movie started to stream on Netflix. Let’s begin from the backstory, Cuties is a story that revolves around an 11-year-old Senegalese Muslim immigrant who lives in a housing project in Paris, named Amy. She comes from a modest and conservative family being Muslims, Amy gets into a company of few outspoken girls who later from a dance group to perform just to gain popularity on social media.

Netflix features 4 teen kids, Fathia Youssouf, Médina El Aidi-Azouni, Esther Gohourou, Ilanah Cami-Goursolas, and Maïmouna Gueye, they were shown in booty shorts and crop tops with seductive dancing and provocative poses. Amy is shown twerking with the dance troupe defying her family’s traditional values.

People started raising their voices on Social media, especially on Twitter backlashing the sexualization of teen girls and a misled perspective of communities resulting in trending #cutiescontroversy. Although Netflix had people by its side, even when people asked to boycott Netflix and cancel Netflix subscriptions, Tessa Thompson tweeted in its support too. Later Netflix apologized for the poster and that the topic was not intended to mislead or put any negative impact on audiences. 

Contrary to the above Cuties have been nominated for Best Film, Directing Award, Grand Jury Prize, and fortunately won in directing award as well. With reduced rage over #cutiescontroversy, you can watch the movie which is now streaming on Netflix.
